The Differences Between Home Theater & Multimedia Projectors
By Epson Projectors

What are the differences between home theater projectors and multimedia projectors?
Multimedia projectors were developed to enable a user to project digital data from a source, typically a PC, onto a screen. Since it was assumed that multimedia projectors would be used primarily in office meeting rooms, designers emphasized such traits as visibility in various lighting conditions, portability, and easy setup. Thus, prospective buyers often use image brightness and unit weight as guides for selecting the model.

Home theater projectors, on the other hand, project a picture from video players or other incoming video sources including high definition. Since it is assumed that they will be installed in the home and used with the lights down low, image quality and contrast are particularly emphasized. So, even though both are projectors, the desired performance differs according to their use.

Did You Know?

What home theater specifications are unique?
TheWXGA (1280 x 720) resolution gives you many more pixels than a standard XGA projector projecting a 16:9 image. An XGA projector (1024x 768) can only use 75% of its pixels to produce a 16:9 image because the rest of the pixels are in the black bars at the top and bottom of the screen. To project a wide-format image, the standard XGA projector uses a total of about 589,000 pixels versus a WXGA image that uses about 921,000 pixels.

What about the difference in brightness?
A multimedia projector is designed to be used in a brightly lit business environment, often in a situation in which people need to take notes from the presentation. Current multimedia projectors offer from 800 to 3,500 ANSI lumens. A home theater projector is desiged to be used in a darkened room.
