JVC Professional Products Company announced the formation of a cooperative relationship with Radyne ComStream to offer solutions for high-quality HDTV content distribution using MPEG-2 4:2:2 profile compression technology. The combination of these unique technologies creates a superior MPEG-2 4:2:2 HD delivery system ideal for high-quality, live-event distribution to theaters equipped for digital cinema.

“The unique combination of the JVC DM-D4600U decoder and the Tiernan THE15A encoder delivers a groundbreaking HD system never before available to the viewing public. We have combined two complementary high-performance technologies and created a solution for recording live events,” explained Lawrence Librach, assistant vice president of JVC Professional Products Company. “The purpose of the 4:2:2 process is to give the images a true live-event appearance, achieving extremely high-quality HD imagery. This system provides far more realistic and lifelike images than conventional HD 4:2:0 systems.”

Radyne ComStream demonstrated its Tiernan THE15A 4:2:2 HD MPEG-2 encoder with the JVC DM-D4600U 4:2:2 HD MPEG-2 decoder at transport stream (TS) rates above 70 Mbps, delivering high-quality images on a cinema-size screen over dark fiber. The Tiernan THE15A video compression process delivers superior HD images with TS rates of up to 108 Mbps and seamless motion estimation across all picture areas.

The decompression functions of the DM-D4600U convert MPEG-2 transport streams smoothly into digital video signals and digital audio signals. The DM-D4600U features 5.1-channel Dolby® Digital passthrough for true surround sound quality.

The combination of technologies is applicable beyond digital cinema distribution to HD videoconferencing, distance learning for medicine and more. When used for HD videoconferencing, the JVC/Radyne ComStream system offers end-to-end delays under 250 ms. When coupled with surround-sound professional audio encoding solutions, this system creates more realistic HD images than is possible with 4:2:0 for truer, richer colors and clean, crisp pictures with no defects or artifacts.
